Group Play

Place the White and Black decks side-by-side on a table. Your goal is to collect 7 cards. (You may want to lower this number as play can go on for quite a while with larger groups.)

Choose a player to draw first - we suggest starting with the person wearing the blackest black.

This player draws a card from the deck of their choice, and reads the question aloud for the group to answer.

White cards, are personal, intimate, and awarded by the card reader to the “most interesting” answer - whatever that means to the reader. Black cards are a bit more straightforward and a point is awarded to those who answer the trivia question correctly. All plays are meant to be playful and fast paced. Play continues clockwise until one player has collected 7 cards/points and can claim the honor of being the night’s Most Morbid player.

If experience is any guide, you’ll be sharing stories and challenging each other’s wit and knowledge for the fun of playing rather than winning.

Alternative ways to play:

  • Shuffle the decks and letting fate decide what kind of card you’ll answer

  • Set a timer for play

  • Speed trivia or trivia without any multiple choice answers; perfect challenge for our death experts.

  • Award trivia cards only to the first person to get the correct answer

  • Couples often find the game is more a conversation starter than a competition. You can draw a card or two each day and text it to your partner to add some spice to their day.

  • Leave a card on each plate for dinner parties…

As we're fond of rule breakers, we encourage you to make up your own rules and share them with us.

— The Cards —

Black Trivia Cards: Death trivia from history, science, mythology, origin of words, culture, and whatever else we could dig up. Most of these cards are multiple choice by a few true or false to speed the game up, so don't hold back, answer quickly and with authority.

Everyone, except the Reader, competes to answer the trivia question. The card is awarded to the player who correctly answers first - so be quick. Ties are decided by the Reader. The correct answer is on the bottom of the card.

Black All Play Cards: These cards challenge players to tap their list making abilities or create answers that are creative and irreverent.

The card is awarded to the most "unique" or "entertaining" answer as determined by the group.

White Discussion Cards: These cards are personal, intimate, challenging, and quirky. They take a bit more time to answer as they'll involve you in a discussion about your experiences and thoughts about death..

Everyone, including the reader, responds to these questions. The card is awarded to the “most interesting” answer as determined by the reader.
